MY ROOT
Acclaimer: No matter the tree, it can only be as strong as its root.
To Papa Wesley, Grand Dad Joe, Grand Dad James, I love and miss y’all. See you in heaven.
I’mma show my Daddy somethin’ ‘fo he leave here.
What a man of God his only son will end up bein’.
I hope & pray before he goes, to put a little boy in his arms named after me & him & ask him for advice about raising & teaching children.
I hope my candle burns so bright it provides the light & reveals my vision, of how even the Dumbest Disciple could inspire & teach millions, how to love & serve & reach out to God & each other & draw one another together in a faithful embrace of fellowship & if we all stand firm with each other with a foundation in God then we would never slip. I mean, I’m hip?
Imma really want him to know that he succeeded in showin’ me the right way to go.
Sittin’ through all those sermons, might have fell on dumb, but not deaf ears, the seeds that you sowed.
Really did used to see myself up there preaching like my father.
Then the way the church used to treat him, I wondered why did he even ever bother, but through the adversity his belief in our Heavenly Holy Almighty God was steadfast & you couldn’t dislodge ‘im.
This taught me to always lean on your faith and He would bring you through.
This also taught me that this life has a way of flattening you, when it knocks you down, but if it only just knocks you down, you can always just get back up & keep gaining ground.
He’s been my hero since before I knew about the Super Friends.
My pops could climb telephone poles & once he got there, wasn’t any problems he couldn't mend.
Never put his hands on my mother, another lesson learned.
He never drank, he never smoked, he played the guitar, sang, & spread the gospel to all who would discern.
More of an intellectual human than a Macho man, but still had steel in his spine.
Saved a girl's life one night when he was awakened by her cries, & everyone else had turned a deaf ear, as she screamed while being viciously attacked where anyone could hear.
God made him strong & courageous & he passed that on to me.
So I’m blessed & also determined to use my testimony to let the world see.
Though it took me a while to figure it out, was blind to it, but now I can see, that by following his example, I too can lead sheep.
With or without a church, he’ll always be “my pastor” to me.
